It’s that time of year again! Season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance kicks off with two hours of auditions. Was it just me or was this audition show a little less painful than usual? As many of you know (and the rest of you will learn), I don’t enjoy these early shows. I love great dancing, but if I wanted to watch it being done badly, I’d watch Dancing with the Stars. Oh snap. Kidding. Sort of. Our first two pit stops on the audition train (on the way to hot tamale town) are Brooklyn and Denver.
Oh, and it might be good to recap the judge’s process in case you’ve forgotten or you’re new. If the judges like what they see during the solo or after choreography the dancer is sent to Vegas. If they don’t like what they see, the dancer is sent home. Let’s get started.
Brooklyn — Day 1
Judges: Nigel, Mary, and Tabitha & Napoleon
First up is contemporary dancer Gabi Rojas, who was born and raised in the circus. She’s got rheumatoid arthritis, and her body is deteriorating. But you can’t tell from her wonderfully expressive performance. Her movement is beautiful. Nigel starts the night out with unusually high praise — but maybe since he hasn’t seen any bad dancing yet he’s not his usual crotchety self. He thinks Gabi will make it into the Top 20 and says she’s one of the best auditions he’s seen in the last five years. Mary gives us her patented scream and Tabitha likes her characterization. The seventh and final preview of the tomorrow’s Sniper/Spy dual update to Team Fortress 2 is upon us, and Valve come bearing gifts.
First off, it looks like the sharp shooting Aussie is getting that jar of pee that we all thought was an April Fool’s joke over a month ago. Could be bad news for Spies and Pyros:
Jarate – The Jar-Based Karate
Jarate is a thrown jar that splashes upon impact. When splashed on enemies, they take 35% more damage for a period of time. Jumping in water will wash off Jarate. Jarate is also able to short out Spies’ cloaking devices. When used on teammates, Jarate will extinguish any fire effects.
Also revealed are 35 brand new achievements for the Sniper class. As a fellow TF2 geek pointed out, some of these seem to be inspired by the ‘Meet The Sniper‘ video.
And finally, in celebration of all the hard work towards bringing TF2 fans these free updates, Valve are making this weekend a free TF2 weekend starting tomorrow. So if you or your buddy haven’t experienced what all the fuss is about, now is the time.

ALBANY, NY – First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson today testified before the House Education and Labor Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities and urged the federal government to adopt childhood nutrition programs to combat the nation’s childhood obesity crisis. The First Lady discussed New York’s own initiatives to improve childhood nutrition and wellness, including “Healthy Steps to Albany: First Lady’s Challenge,” a program she designed to encourage middle school students to increase their physical activity and eat nutritious foods.
“If we are to fulfill our promise of a healthier future, we must make nutrition and exercise a priority in the classroom and cafeteria, at home and in our communities. If we are to make the changes needed to end the rise of childhood obesity and the illnesses associated with it, then we must act now,” First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson said. “This is our responsibility as parents, teachers and leaders. We are all obligated to ensure that our children have the education, training and encouragement they need to lead healthy, productive lives.”

Matt Cassel is preparing for a season as a starting quarterback for the first time since his senior year at Chatsworth (Calif.) High School.

It arrived for Cassel in the form of an offseason trade that sent him from the riches of the New England Patriots to the rubble of the Kansas City Chiefs. He goes from a team loaded with offensive weapons to a club in transition with the arrival of general manager Scott Pioli and coach Todd Haley, a management tandem from the Bill Parcells tree.
In New England, Cassel was asked to mostly manage the game and did it well, winning 10 games and throwing for nearly 3,700 yards in his 15 starts in place of injured Tom Brady last season. With the Chiefs, Cassel will be asked to win games with far fewer resources.
Not tight end Tony Gonzalez. The Chiefs sent the perennial Pro Bowler to the Atlanta Falcons for a second-round pick in the 2010 draft.
